Nouveau système d'immatriculation des véhicules en 2009

! Many people felt that the new numbers deprived them of a certain regional identity and so the government, in the face of considerable opposition, has modified the new law. It will now again be obligatory to include the number of a department but ... The amusing innovation (this could only be French...) is that it does not have to be the department of residence, but can be chosen at will by the car owner and can be any department that happens to appeal to him! So if you are a Parisian but don’t want to insulted when driving in the provinces, you can pretend that your car comes from any part of France that takes your fancy. Does this really provide an answer to the question of regional identity? It makes you wonder...

As from January 2009, a different system of car registration will be applied to all new vehicles purchased. Up until now, French plates mentioned not only a serial number and letters, but also the number of the department in which the vehicle was registered.

The new mediatheque opened on October 6th in Pervenchères (between Mortagne and Bellême).
You can borrow books, comic strips, DVD’s, videos or magazines.
There is a computer section with a high speed internet link, at the disposal of visitors.

Du 5 au 31 décembre 2008 au Mans sur la Place de la République, le 7 décembre à Mortagne au Perche au Carré du Perche et les 13 et 14 décembre à Nogent le Rotrou
Christmas markets
Don’t forget to look out for all the Christmas markets that will soon be setting up their stands.
This year, the Christmas market in Le Mans will be on the Place de la République, beginning on the 5th December and lasting until the end of the month. Zoé and Eric will be selling their products from Equador, and you can be assured of finding a wide variety of artisanal products and Christmas decorations, with, of course, the delicious cinammon flavoured hot wine.
In Mortagne au Perche, there will be a Christmas market in the Carré du Perche on December 7th.
In Nogent le Rotrou, the market will be on the 13th and 14th of December with a German theme.

The “Journées du Patrimoine”, which involves opening places of historical interest normally closed to the public, takes place this year on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st September.

Nouvelle réglementation
A partir du 1er juillet 2008, il est obligatoire d'avoir un gilet réfléchissant à bord de son véhicule, ainsi qu'un triangle de sécurité dans le coffre, sous peine d'amende.

As from July 1st 2008, it will be obligatory to keep a high visibility tabard and a warning triangle in your car.
When buying a new car, drivers in France are now being offered financial incentives by the government to do their bit for the environment.

Les marchés du Perche
Il existe encore beaucoup de ses rendez-vous réguliers donnés aux consommateurs qui aiment voir les produits et discuter avec les vendeurs. C’est un lieu de rencontre aussi, on y retrouve les habitués, on prend des nouvelles de ses voisins, on va au bistrot à la fin du marché et on trinque avec les amis… Dans la plupart des marchés, les producteurs fermiers qui vendent directement leurs marchandises, se regroupent.
Markets in The Perche
There are still many weekly markets where consumers can buy fresh products  in a more convivial atmosphere than the local supermarket. You get to know the stall-holders, meet up with friends and other locals and often end up in a café for a drink with friends. In most of the markets, local farmers selling their products directly join together in the same area.

Dans l'Orne, à Argentan, l'Université du Goût, inaugurée en 2006, est ouverte à tous et ses cours sont gratuits.

In 2006, the philosopher Michel Onfray, a native of the Orne, inaugurated this new open University in Argentan which he himself has set up with the food critic Marc de Champérard. Their aim is to provide free conferences open to all and, with the help of some of the most prestigious chefs in France, demonstrate how to create delicious meals with very simple ingredients.

Nous sommes très heureux ici en France, un style de vie très agréable, alors je me demande pourquoi mes copines (quatre couples) veulent retourner en Angleterre.

We find people here friendly and welcoming, countryside quiet and beautiful, food excellent, cost of living less and climate on average brighter and a bit warmer, even here in the north – so why go back?

Une centaine de bénévoles de l’association des Randonneurs du Perche reçoivent les randonneurs cyclotouristes au Carré du Perche de Mortagne du Paris-Brest-Paris. Les membres de l’EFDP sont volontaires pour faire les interprètes.

Mortagne-au-Perche is one of the eight control points, and this year 350 beds were set up in the Carré du Perche, with restaurant facilities, mechanical assistance, and bodily assistance provided by the Red Cross. Over a hundred volonteers were there to help out with the logistics including several of our members who acted as translators to assist the English speaking participants in any way they could.

On September, places of historical interest, normally closed to the public, will have exceptional open days and are a cultural event not to be missed. Inaugurated in 1984, many public places and private homes will be open, usually free of charge, to visitors.

Entre Condé sur Huisne et Alençon via Mortagne-au-Perche, longue de 65 km une « voie verte » : pour les piétons, cyclistes ou les cavaliers, pour la redécouverte des paysages, des villages, de la faune et de la flore.

The « Voies Vertes » or Green Roads : This will be an added tourist attraction in the Perche and will no doubt result in the creation of other activities linked to the development of this itinerary, but one of the most important aspects is the preservation of the natural habitat and wildlife.

Flea markets/car boot sales : They are becoming more and more popular, as hunting for antiques ( « chiner ») is a favourite pastime in France. The real antique hunter will be up very early in the morning to arrive first at the sale and grab the best bargains. For the rest of us, it's an enjoyable thing to do on a Sunday, with always a chance of finding the object of our dreams!
