Plus une master class qu’un cours de dessin ou de peinture. « Les gens viennent avec leur envie de peinture ou de sculpture : gouache, aquarelle ou tout autre matière, à chacun sa technique. Je les aide à réaliser leur objet d’art. »

It is more of a Master class than a classical art class. “People come with just an urge to paint or sculpt. They may be absolute beginners who have never touched a paintbrush in their lives. I encourage them to give a free rein to their inspiration, and advise and help them with the technicalities of their work”.

Cours de cuisine dans le Perche
C’est à La Perrière, dans le tout nouveau « Salon de Poupy », espace consacré aux fêtes et dîners entre amis, qu’ont lieu cet automne des cours de cuisine par Philippe Legendre. À la fin des ateliers les convives dégustent tous ensemble les mets préparés et repartent avec 3 à 4 recettes.

This autumn, cooking lessons by the chef Philippe Legendre. He has travelled the world and enjoys passing on his knowledge of different culinary specialities from places as far apart as Tuscany, India, Australia and Thailand. Each cooking workshop lasts 4 hours for a maximum of ten people.

Manoir de Soisay
Olivier et Aline Le Grand propriétaire du Manoir de Soisay : « Lorsque nous sommes arrivés ici, fin 2005, nous souhaitions un lieu ouvert aux artistes contemporains, en particulier aux sculpteurs. Nous avons ici des œuvres monumentales de Vincent Barré, Etienne Viard et Elmar Trenkwalder, un artiste autrichien renommé. » Aline, quant à elle, souhaite élargir la résidence aux musiciens : « J’aime la musique, mais ce que je désire avant tout, c’est que le travail des artistes soit en écho avec le lieu ».

Aline and Olivier Le Grand are very sensitive to the arts : “When we arrived here in 2005, we wanted a place that would welcome modern artists, particularly sculptors. We have here the monumental works of Vincent Barré, Etienne Viard and ElmaTrenkwalder, a well-known Austrian artist”. As for Aline, she would like to enlarge the circle of residents to include musicians. “I love music, but what is most important to me is that the artists’ work be in harmony with the surroundings”.

Jurgen Schadeberg, photo-journaliste
Né en 1931, Jurgen étudie la photographie à Berlin puis à Hambourg mais quitte l’Allemagne déchirée par la guerre en 1950 et part en Afrique du Sud où il fut l’un des rares photographes occidentaux à se pencher sur la condition du peuple Noir. Il enregistre le début du mouvement pour la liberté, la répression, la vie et la culture dans les townships.

Jurgen Schadeberg was born in Berlin in 1931, he emigrated to South Africa in 1950 and became Chief Photographer, Picture Editor and Art Director on Drum Magazine. It was during this time that Jurgen photographed pivotal moments in the lives of South Africans in the fifties. These photographs represent the life and struggle of South Africans during Apartheid and include important figures in South Africa’s history such as Nelson Mandela.

La librairie « le goût des mots »
Des bouquins en langue anglaise dans une librairie de Mortagne au Perche : choix de d’éditions récentes constamment renouvelées. Quelques exemples : The Road de Cormac McCarthy, 2006, Restless de William Boyd, 2006 ou Old Tight d’Harlan Coben, 2008. On y trouve aussi une collection de CD classique, jazz et musique du monde.

English books in Mortagne au Perche
A new book-shop, “Le Goût des Mots” : English novels.  These are mostly recent novels which have been acclaimed by the critics,  for example The Road by Cormac McCarthy (2006) Restless by William Boyd (2006) or Hold Tight by Harlan Coben (2008) plus some classics.  They will constantly renew their stock and it will be possible to place any special orders.

Christopher Anthony
C'est un des nouveaux conseillers municipaux de St Jouin de Blavou, commune d’environ 300 habitants, dont 220 votants. A 55 ans, Christopher a trouvé sa place dans son village et dans sa région. Il est gestionnaire dans la société immobilière basée sur le domaine du Golf de Bellême.

Christopher has been in France since 1993 and has been implicated in village life for several years. He was already a militant member of the Liberal party in England and on settling in the Perche, was keen to play a useful rôle in the activities of the village.

Paul Phillips
Il est consultant. Cet anglais de 52 ans vit en France depuis 30 ans. Il était à l’époque en Région parisienne, il est arrivé dans le Perche en résidence secondaire et y est désormais à temps plein. Il crée son entreprise en 2002 et ce n’est qu’en 2008 qu’il se décide à se présenter aux élections municipales à St Germain de Martigny, pour représenter, dit-il, les différents habitants du village, « Avant ça, je n’ai jamais eu l’idée, d’autant plus que ma femme était sur l’autre liste ! ».
 

Paul, originally from Chesham in Bucks, has been in France for 30 years. Paul now works from home as a development consultant. He is also a member of the Comité des Fêtes. It was a last minute decision for Paul to stand in the municipal elections on a second list that was composed just two days before the voting date.

In 2006, the philosopher Michel Onfray, a native of the Orne, inaugurated this new open University in Argentan which he himself has set up with the food critic Marc de Champérard. Their aim is to provide free conferences open to all and, with the help of some of the most prestigious chefs in France, demonstrate how to create delicious meals with very simple ingredients

Dans sa vie antérieure, Martin Gardner travaillait comme géologue pour une compagnie pétrolière, travaillant partout dans le monde – Afrique, Tunisie, Azerbaïdjan, Oman .... Sa femme Sheena l'accompagnait, mais il y a cinq ans, ils en ont eu assez de cette vie de nomades et ont opté pour un changement radical – s'installer quelque part et ne plus bouger !

David Commenchal
Ce photographe talentueux réside dans le Perche depuis 1999. Auparavant, il était moniteur de voile. De la Corse à l’Egypte, de la Bretagne à l’Irlande il a enseigné l’art de la navigation avant de s’établir dans le Perche… où il exerce le métier de photographe. Son œil malin fixe sur le papier ce que le nôtre ne voit pas forcément. Tous les mois, il nous fait l’amitié d’une photo dans The Perche tous les mois.

His principal exhibitions : Zingaro Beauport Abbey, the Ecomusée du Perche, the Manoir de Courboyer. He covers official events or private weddings, etc.

Effie Iorsch
Une anglaise au service des britanniques qui s’installent dans le Perche. Elle habite à Boissy Maugis avec son mari, François, agent immobilier, et ses deux enfants, depuis environ cinq ans. Cette passionnée de dressage partage son temps entre ses chevaux et l’assistance aux anglais perdus dans la campagne percheronne.

Eva Colombi
C'est une des françaises qui vient régulièrement au Club Franco-Anglais. Sa motivation : son fils vit en Californie. Elle compte le rejoindre dans quelques années et parler avec ses petits enfants dans leur langue…

Eve Colombi is French and comes regularly to the Anglo-French club. Why? Because her son lives in California and she hopes to join him there in a few years time and be able to communicate with her grandchildren in their mother tongue.

Perché… dans le Perche
Yvan est français, Claire est anglaise. Arrivés par hasard dans le Perche à Bellou le Trichard, ils ont décidé de s’y installer. Claire s’est reconvertie en architecte paysager. Yvan travaille toujours la moitié de la semaine à Paris. Ils sont tombés amoureux d’un arbre majestueux dont immédiatement Yvan a eu l’idée d’y construire une cabane suspendue. Ils en ont fait une maison d’hôtes. C’était un rêve d’enfant !

It was a childhood dream! But first and foremost, Yvan spends as much time as possible himself in this haven of peace. We will visit them during one of our next Anglo-French club meetings.

Being on call at night, watching the continual stream of contestants arriving at Carré du Perche, most disorientated, their small minor like lamps on their helmets, from darkness, into the brightness of electric lights, the sound of the shoes on the tiles, and then the questions, where do I get my card stamped ?? toilet ?? Bed ?? Drink ?? Doctor ?? Internet ?? Notice board ?? Bike repairs ?? Food ?

The Perche n°3

Annette King
Cette canadienne est arrivée en France il y a seulement deux ans. Elle a vécu en pleine campagne percheronne, mais très vite a éprouvé le besoin de rejoindre une ville… Elle a choisi Mortagne-au-Perche. Annette est une fidèle de l’EFDP et des clubs franco-anglais. Elle est artiste peintre, et attend d’être bien installée pour continuer son art. Elle adore aussi la musique jazz et… le vélo et se fait des amis autour de ces activités. Annette la canadienne percheronne était aussi bénévole du Paris-Brest-Paris… en 2007.

Last summer my friend Rita Ovens and I decided to go on a biking holiday here together. As we had an invitation to stay near Bézier at the end of September, we decided to ride there from just south of Tours. We planned to head for Toulouse in manageable distances, so that we could arrive at Bézier along the Canal du Midi as our final stage.
